FALL TBR
Today I thought it would be fun to talk about the books I’m planning on reading this fall! Fall is my absolute favorite time of year; I love the colder, crisper air, I love the atmosphere of it all. More than that, I feel incredibly motivated to read warm, fuzzy kinds of books during this time of year. Books that chill, thrill, and/or inspire me. So let’s talk about my top five for this fall!
1. FURTHERMORE by Tahereh Mafi
Synopsis: This is an imaginative story following twelve-year-old Alice Queensmeadow, whose father disappeared three years ago, taking with him nothing but a single ruler. Now she is determined to find him. But Alice is a colorless girl in a world bursting with color, and her only companion on this journey is a boy named Oliver whose own magical ability is based in lies and deceit. On this journey, she hopes to find her father–but also herself.
I recently went to a book signing with her and her husband, Ransom Riggs, where I got to talk to them for a while, and they signed my books. It was so fun! I’ve been interested in FURTHERMORE since I first saw that gorgeous cover, but now that I have a signed copy I’m even more excited to read it. 2. DARK HORSES by Cecily Von Ziegesar
Synopsis: Teenage Merritt Wenner has been struggling to keep her head above the water after the death of both her grandmother and her beloved horse. One day, she snaps: walks out of the SAT, and disappears. Her parents, panicking about what to do, decide to send her residential equine-assisted therapy program called Good Fences. There she will discover a failed racehorse named Red who has terrified everyone but her. Seeing their connection, Red’s owner funds their launch into the hunter/jumper circuit, where they will find adventure, rough competition, and two mysterious and handsome guys.
Does that name sound familiar to you? This is the same author that wrote the best-selling series Gossip Girl! I haven’t read those books yet, but I watched the television adaption and loved it. I mean, who doesn’t love Chuck Bass!? He’s kind of the best thing ever. *swoons*
This is the author’s newest book, releasing on September 13th, and I was lucky enough to receive an early hardcover of this book as a part of Booktube Tours! Booktube Tours is hosted by the lovely Grace over at LovingDemBooks, and she and Soho Press were generous enough to send me a copy!
3. HOW TO HANG A WITCH by Adriana Mather
Synopsis: This book follows a girl by the name of Samantha, who is the descendant of one of the men responsible for the Salem Witch Trials. Her mother moves her to Salem, Massachusetts, only to be met with a stifling hostility from a group of girls called the Descendants. Guess who their ancestors were? Things go from strange to stranger when Sam comes across a handsome, angry ghost, and must find a way to keep history from repeating itself.
This book was honestly a cover-buy for me, because both the title and the cover are so beautiful and mysterious. I haven’t heard much about this book in way of reviews, but one of my lovely booktube friends recently read and reviewed this book, and she really enjoyed it, so I’m hoping I enjoy it as much as she did :)
4. NIGHT FILM by Marisha Pessl
Synopsis: This is a fast-paced thriller about an investigative journalist named Scott McGrath who becomes obsessed with the death of a beautiful young prodigy who was also the daughter of an iconic and reclusive filmmaker.
Thrillers are some of my favorite things in the world, and although I know literally nothing about this book other than the fact that it’s twisty and turny and messes with your mind, I think it’s going to be fantastic. (Also, I literally got this hardcover book for $1 when I was out of town on vacation, so that just makes owning it that much sweeter!)
5. MY GRANDMOTHER ASKED ME TO TELL YOU SHE’S SORRY by Fredrik Backman
Synopsis: Our main character is seven-year-old Elsa, who is incredibly intelligent, and bullied by her classmates for being different. Her dearest friend in the world is her paintball-gun-wielding, cigarette-chain-smoking grandmother, who tells her bedtime stories of a magical land called Miamas and teaches her a special language that only they speak. But when Elsa’s grandmother passes away from cancer, she leaves Elsa behind a series of apologetic letters for her to deliver, which sends her off on the adventure of a lifetime.
I’ve heard so many wonderful things about this author in general (you may have heard of his first novel, A MAN CALLED OVE, which was a best-seller in his native Sweden and recently got adapted to film). I was kindly sent this book also by Grace over at LovingDemBooks and Simon and Schuster as a part of Booktube Tours, so thank you all so very much for sending this to me! It was originally published a couple of years ago in Sweden, and the writing style is just gorgeous. I’m about halfway through this book currently and love, love, loving it!
